Day Workshops

KEMPA will bring a one- to two-day workshop of specialized instruction to your school (or a group of schools in a geographic area who will meet at one school).  We recommend a 20-student minimum for each day.

Here’s how it works:

Each one-hour block of instruction would focus on one specialized area, for example, journalistic writing, layout and design fundamentals, photojournalism, leadership, staff management, alternative coverage, press law, InDesign, etc.

The advisers who are hosting the workshop select the topics they want covered in the instruction.

KEMPA will send instructors with expertise in the areas selected for the workshop. They will deliver a total of six hours of instruction.

The dates for your workshop are flexible, depending on instructors’ schedules, during the summer or school year, on the weekend or during the week.

A schedule that works well includes a short introduction followed by three hours of instruction (with brief breaks), a half hour for lunch, and then another three hours of instruction and a short closing.

The cost is $35 per student (per day).  If the workshop will have 20 or fewer students, the flat fee is $700 (per day).

Host school responsibilities:

Decide how lunch will be handled. Those attending could bring a bag lunch, or parents could provide lunch, or the publication could pay for lunch.

Invite other advisers in the area to attend at no charge, even if they bring no students.  If they attend with their students, they will be expected to help work individually with students during work time or present a session if the workshop is large.

If you are hosting a large workshop that includes concurrent sessions, recruit more instructors from local professionals or attending advisers or volunteer to teach a session yourself.

Host the instructors overnight if they are driving from a distance and need accommodations.

Provide nametags, photocopying, and computer network access for the instructors, if needed.

Payment to KEMPA should be made on the day of the workshop.
